Polyurethane round belts: efficiency and versatility in applications

Used in various industrial applications, polyurethane round belts are ideal for light transmissions, medium-low speeds, and low-load conveying.

Flexible, wear-resistant, high-precision. These are the main features of polyurethane round belts that bring interesting technical advantages to specific industrial applications; the most important ones:

  • A high coefficient of friction which ensures slip-free transmissions
  • Multidirectional flexibility which allows routing over small diameter pulleys
  • Low operating noise even at high speeds
  • Dimensional precision with tight tolerances for precision applications
  • Fatigue resistance

Why polyurethane?

Thermoplastic polyurethane is used for round belts because it has excellent mechanical, chemical, and environmental features.

Mechanical features:

  • Hardness ranging from 84-95 Shore A
  • Tensile strength of 35-55 MPa
  • Elongation at break 400-600%
  • Excellent abrasion resistance
  • Elastic modulus at room temperature 10-50 MPa

Chemical and environmental features:

  • Resistance to mineral and synthetic oils
  • Good resistance to solvents
  • Thermal stability (from -40°C to +100°C)

Standard supply dimensions

Diameter: from 2 mm to 15 mm
Lengths: supplied by the meter or welded endless to the required length
Dimensional tolerances: ±0.1 mm for diameters up to 10 mm
See the website section (enter ››)

Typical applications where polyurethane round belts are used:

  • Automation and robotics: transmission for precision rotary axes, automatic tensioning mechanisms, linear movements.
  • Textile industry: weaving looms, knitting machines, ironing and calendering systems
  • Packaging and logistics: light conveyor belts, dosing and filling systems, labeling machines
  • Graphics industry: plotters, industrial printers, cutting systems, binding machines

Selection criteria and compatibility with pulleys

Which parameters should be considered in terms of design:

  • Working load (evaluation of static and dynamic stresses)
  • Operating speed
  • Working environment (temperature, presence of oils or chemical agents)
  • System geometry (bending radii, wrap angles)
  • Required precision (dimensional and positioning tolerances)

For pulleys, the recommended construction materials supplied by us are:

  • Anodized aluminum
  • Stainless steel
  • Nylon

Surface finishes: Ra 0.8-1.6 μm
Groove geometry: semicircular profile with a 10-15% allowance

To define the pulley diameter according to the polyurethane belt diameter, see the PDF document of the catalog (enter ››). In general, the pulley diameter must be at least 10-15 times the belt diameter.

Problems and solutions for polyurethane round belts

  • Premature wear (over-tensioning, misalignment, high temperatures)
  • Slippage (under-tensioning, worn pulley, overload)
  • Fatigue failure (too small bending radii, excessive tension cycles)
